Are you a Kitchen or Living Room Christian?

In my house it seems like the most work is in the kitchen. You have to cook and then clean up from the cooking and eating. I wouldn’t call it a resting place.

But the living room is where I watch TV, kick back, play games, and take naps.

Are you a Kitchen or Living Room Christian?

Read this story about 2 people, one who was a kitchen Christian and one who was a living room Christian.

As they continued their travel, Jesus entered a village. A woman by the name of Martha welcomed him and made him feel quite at home. She had a sister, Mary, who sat before the Master, hanging on every word he said. But Martha was pulled away by all she had to do in the kitchen. Later, she stepped in, interrupting them. “Master, don’t you care that my sister has abandoned the kitchen to me? Tell her to lend me a hand.” The Master said, “Martha, dear Martha, you’re fussing far too much and getting yourself worked up over nothing. One thing only is essential, and Mary has chosen it––it’s the main course, and won’t be taken from her. Luke 10:38-42 (The Message)

Now, I am sure Jesus would enjoy Martha’s food she was preparing for dinner. But did you notice He was in the living room and rebuked Martha for spending so much time in the kitchen. He said stop your moving about and come hang out with me and Mary.

Wow. I have to admit I am a kitchen Christian. I am always preparing this message, planning this activity, writing another blog or article, going to this meeting – in other words working to give a dinner to somebody. In reality, I probably need to stop some of my fussing around in the kitchen and just go to the living room and hang out with Jesus.

How many times have I bragged about how our Church kitchen is the best in town? How many times have I bragged about all the stuff we prepare for others? I have got to get out of the business of building the biggest kitchen. I have made ministry about the wrong room. It’s not all about the food we serve but who comes to visit and the conversation that follows.

Lord, I pray help me to prepare a living room you would want to come hang out in.
