Do We Work for the Gifts of the Holy Spirit?

There are 9 Gifts of the Spirit.

Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom [Gift 1], to another the message of knowledge [Gift 2] by means of the same Spirit, to another faith  [Gift 3] by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing  [Gift 4] by that one Spirit, to another miraculous [Gift 5] powers, to another prophecy  [Gift 6], to another distinguishing between spirits [Gift 7], to another speaking in different kinds of tongues  [Gift 8], and to still another the interpretation of tongues [Gift 9] . All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines. 1 Corinthians 12:7-11 (NIV)

How do we get the gifts of the Holy Spirit? Do we work for them? Do we earn them in some way through our level of holiness?

Simple answer is no. They are gifts not awards of the Holy Spirit.

If I can’t work for or earn the gifts how do I get the gifts?

You get the gifts by putting yourself into position to receive them as gifts. Here are the 3 steps I do that may work for you:

1. Ask for the Gifts in order to bless someone. Start out by asking for a specific one you think the person may need.

2. Rest in anticipation that it will happen.

3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 over and over again whenever you see an opportunity for a gift to bless someone or you may need it in your ministry.

You will see the gifts handed to you by the Holy Spirit as you position yourself to be a blessing to others!

But eagerly desire the greater gifts… 1 Corinthians 12:31 (NIV)
