Recently I heard an old familiar song by the super rock band Pink Floyd – Comfortably Numb. It was written in 1979 and that was probably the first time I heard it too. I was 19 then.
According to the song writer Roger Walters, he wrote the song about a time when he was a child sick with fever. If you haven’t heard the song it has an intense melodramatic style of rock music. Something very different happened to me as I listened to the song than I had ever experienced before.
I became deeply sad. I felt the Holy Spirit’s sadness. Yes, I felt the Holy Spirit while listening to Pink Floyd! Don’t ask me how. I can’t. I felt the Holy Spirit impressing upon me that the words to this song were how many of His children feel. I experienced a part of the tangible sadness the Holy Spirit was feeling.

When I was a child I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye
I turned to look but it was gone

The Holy Spirit impressed on me how His children were so full of pain that they have become numb. So numb it was now comfortable. So numb that it seemed a normal part of life. So numb that even any remembrances of dreams are gone.
I started praying for increased authority to know how to heal people’s emotions and memories. Will you join me?
Father, help me to pause long enough to notice people and where they are at. Teach me how to help people where it hurts. I pray that we will be emotionally resurrected so that the dream you put inside them that is gone can be resurrected. Amen.

With the Spirit of God living in us, we cannot avoid the hurt that sits out there in the world today. Part of the reason that you and I were created was to allow our Lord Jesus to use us to heal that hurting dark world. Sometimes it is just that prayer that we utter for that homeless man standing on the ramp to I-75 with a sign that says, “Homeless. Will Work for Food. God Bless You” that will turn his heart to home.
Do we sometimes, just because of our own weariness, take a vacation? Allow ourselves to get “Comfortbly Nume? We need to understand the times. You see… we are those who have been called for just a time as this, and we need to be connected and hear His voice clearly so that we can move in these extreme days. Isn’t this our birthright?… and our calling?
Profound and to the point. Unfortunately, I have also fallen prey to this spiritual state at times. May the Holy Spirit never let me languish in this state.
