Assignment = Calling + Gift + Skill + Character

I am an engineer by training and mindset. God works with how he created us. So with me he often speaks to me in simple formulas. The formula this article talks about is: “Assignment = Calling + Gift + Skill + Character”. We will talk about this formula, but let us start with the result: Assignment

As a Christian, the Trinity gives you assignments to spread his Kingdom to others. These assignments vary by person and over time. But with every assignment comes requirements to successfully complete them. The harder the assignment, the more requirements. Have you ever been assigned? Ask Holy Spirit what is your assignment if you don’t know.

Calling

Holy Spirit calls you to an assignment. You don’t get to pick and choose like we do with food at a buffet. There are general commands in the Bible like love and serve one another. Those callings are required for everyone. A specific calling is whatever Holy Spirit tells you to do. It can be as simple as paying for someone’s meal and as a complex as starting a business or ministry. So, we need to quickly obey what Holy Spirit is asking. Don’t delay. He doesn’t change your calling if you don’t like it. Your destiny is tied to obeying your calling.

Gift

There are 3 major categories of gifts in the Bible. You have or will get whatever gift you need to carry out your assignment. This is the supernatural component of your assignment. God does not leave you on your own. He adds his super to your natural to make you supernatural. We find the 3 major categories of gifts in Romans 12:6-8, 1 Corinthians 12:4-11, and Ephesians 4:11-12. I will let you study them. Too long for an article, but ask Holy Spirit for the ‘super’ regularly in the way you need it to complete your assignment.

Skill

Every assignment requires skill on your part. It could be a low skill assignment, but most assignments are not. Let’s say you want to be a writer. No one starts out with writing that communicates well. Take classes, get a mentor, and practice a lot. You can have the supernatural of God, but he works with your skill. Develop a plan to increase your skill. With persistence and practice, you will become good.

Character

This part of the formula insures your success for the long run. You can have a calling, be gifted, and highly skilled, but if your character is not developed, you will fail over time. No character – no longevity. What is character? In a nutshell, it is walking in the 9 fruits of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). The fruits are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. This is where you need the power of Holy Spirit. Ask him to make you a person of high character!

Summary

Being successful in your assignments boils down to Live Close to Holy Spirit and with his help and your hard work you will have many adventures of a life time with the Trinity!
