A Call for Prophets!

A revival is coming to America, maybe the greatest one we have ever had. It could go beyond a revival and birth a reformation. A reformation is when our culture and institutions change because of the christian influence. We need Prophets to help guide and steward this revival and reformation!
It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Ephesians 4:11-13 (NIV 1984)
These verses show Jesus giving 5 gifts to the church to mature them. They are apostle, prophet, teacher, pastor, and evangelist. The body of Christ will not mature without the gift of prophet.
This article is about the gift of prophet, not the gift of prophecy as found in 1 Corinthians 14:10. Prophet is a governmental position given by God. It is different than the gift of prophecy which is given by God for the encouragement of individuals.

  1. Why We Need Prophets
    Steward His Presence & Holiness
I believe one of the major components of the revival is the presence and holiness of God. We will see salvations, healing, and deliverance, but His presence and holiness is going to be a powerful component.
The prophet’s gift helps steward this. Past revivals have ended because of a stewardship problem with the people leading it. Not understanding how to move, go, and what to do next can stop a revival.
    Lead in Personal Intimacy
There are many metaphors describing Christians in the Bible – soldiers, living stones, and farmers. But I believe the main metaphor is the Bride. It best describes what God wants to happen with His people. The Bride is a picture of intimacy. The prophet typically is the most intimate with Jesus. So they can help lead in bringing the church into an intimate relationship with Jesus.
  2. Belonging is a Key to Personal Success
Join a Team. Everything in the NT is in a Team
We need prophets to work with teams in local churches. They will then network with other prophets to form a ‘company of prophets’ to grow, mature their gift, and accountability!
I have met prophets in this region who will not get involved with the local church. My experience has been this has happened for primarily 2 reasons.
First reason, they have an Old Testament view of prophets. They think their gift is the highest gift and act alone. This is the way the Prophet often was in the Old Testament. But this is not true in the New Testament. The apostle is the highest gift, but all 5 gifts are to work together as a team.
Jesus set up a whole new order when He set up the institution of the church. In the Old Testament, you had priests and prophets governing the spiritual realm. In the New Testament, you have Apostles, Prophets, Pastors, Evangelists, Teachers, Elders, Deacons, and priests – 6 new positions with the positions of priests and prophets being greatly redefined.
Second reason, many prophets and prophetic people have experienced so much rejection from the church that they don’t want to be a part of a church anymore.
But I want to tell you that things are shifting. The value of the office is here and healing is available. Your greatest joy will be working with other gifts and the body of Christ.
I am believing for prophets to come forth in our region and join teams in churches. Prophets will then network within the church and other churches. I am calling these networks a ‘company of prophets’. This phrase is used 9 times in the NIV 1984 translation of 2 Kings.
These teams are banding together for a common purpose, fellowship, and training. We need this banding together. There are no lone rangers in the New Testament with any office.
Ephesians 2:19-22 (NIV 1984) Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God’s people and members of God’s household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.
Prophets are now a part of a team of people to accomplish the things of God. They must be properly aligned with a corporate community that has Apostolic input. This can be hard and humbling for a prophet because they often see in the spirit first. But it must be realized that while seeing in the spirit first is required, that does not mean the job is finished. What is seen in the Spirit must be built in the earth. Seeing and declaring is the first step, but it is only the first step of many. Apostles are the first to build in the physical. Prophets must align themselves with Apostles to see what they have seen finished. There is no speak and run in God’s kingdom.
And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues. 1 Corinthians 12:28 (NIV 1984)
    Alignment with Others Prevents Deception
Prophets (actually all believers) that walk alone with usually end up in deception and/or picked off by the enemy – the same as all the other offices. This is often hard for the prophet because they spend so much time alone with God that it is often hard to come out of that ‘prayer closet’ and walk with others.
Because the prophet gets revelation from God they often think they are immune to deception or a falling away. This is not true. This dynamic can cause prophets to go into deception because of the entry of pride and not understanding that God has not given any office or person the full picture.
Isolation is very dangerous to any of the offices, especially a Prophet. A Prophet in isolation assumes they can do more than they can. An Apostle in isolation assumes they can build accurately by themselves.
    Allow Yourself to be Pastored
Prophets need to be pastored as a human being not just mentored in your gift. You are a person not just a gift. Pastor cares about your whole soul, family, health, family, etc beyond your gift. Realize you don’t have to have all the truth – only a part. You are still valuable even if you don’t have a word. In a church with the right culture, there is no competition for the best words. Others can hear God too. You don’t always have to be ‘on’ andhave a word. You will not always have the word. No one knows it all or even a majority.
Accountability Protects You and Increases Your Gift
Teams cause a growth in character to match your spiritual Gifts because you are around people. It is easy to be spiritual when all you do is pray and stay away from people. Prophets need to be as high in character and integrity as they are in gifting. Matter of fact there gifting is going to increase when there character increases.
    Accountability brings accuracy.
Accountability is necessary to finish well.
  3. Keep Growing!
Your continued growth insures your long term success. Here are 3 things to continue growing in.
    Stay in His Presence
No. 1 Job is to Stay in His presence. For Him, not to get a word. Your identity is in Jesus, not your prophetic gift
    Increase Communication Skills
Communication is key to Working With Others. Develop communication skills because you are in a team. It is often hard for prophets to share what they got, and then to share in a way that communicates exactly with others. So much of what prophets get are visions, emotions, intuition that is hard to share. But keep trying and growing. This communication will get better with effort.
    Character
To continue receiving vision requires righteous living. It requires living a life pleasing to the Lord.
He who walks righteously and speaks what is right, who rejects gain from extortion and keeps his hand from accepting bribes, who stops his ears against plots of murder and shuts his eyes against contemplating evil‐‐this is the man who will dwell on the heights, whose refuge will be the mountain fortress. His bread will be supplied, and water will not fail him. Your eyes will see the king in his beauty and view a land that stretches afar. Isaiah 33:15‐17 (NIV)
The ‘Company of Prophets’ is coming forth. We want everyone in it that God has called! We want you and need your gift.
