So what’s the answer to American Christianity? It’s not enough to just identify the problem. As Christians we need to point to a solution.
I don’t have near the whole answer but I do want to talk about a starting point.
We need to change our focus in Christianity from a for to a with.
In a consumer mentality of Christianity we think God is about what He can do for us. This is the problem. This is the mentality of the prodigal son story in Luke 15. The younger son was not interested in a relationship with His Father as much as he was interested in what the Father could do for him. His relationship was centered around the word for. For him.
The answer to a consumer mentality is not the other extreme though. It is not what we can do for the father. This is the mistake the older brother made. He did many things for the father but did not have a relationship with the father either. His reason for no relationship was just different but it was still centered around the wrong thing. Centered around the word for. For the father.
Our answer to maturity in Christianity is not what Father God can do for us or what we can do for Him.
One answer to consumer Christianity is to learn to walk with the Father.
When the older son complained about the lavish treatment the younger son got when he came home the father responded by saying, ‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. Luke 15:31.
Living to do for the father is not the answer.
Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles? ’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers! ’ Matthew 7:22-23
The answer is to walk with God.
So, brethren, in whatever station or state or condition of life each one was when he was called, there let him continue with and close to God. 1 Corinthians 7:24
Walk with God. Enjoy Him. Enjoy the relationship without having to get something from Him or having to give something to Him.
I guarantee you it will revolutionize your life.
“First and foremost we are called to Someone, not to something or to somewhere.” – Os Guinness
Amen! May we all be WITH HIM as a way of life
