Spiritual Hunger: Exposure > Desire > Appetite > Hunger > Eat

This article is about ‘Flow’. Flow, by definition, means a moving stream of something going forward. For instance, a flow of water or a flow of numbers like 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. The number 2 follows 1, 3 follows 2, etc. To get to the number 5, you go through the previous 4 numbers. This article is about a Christian flow. A flow that I have seen of how God moves us forward in his ways. The Flow in this article is: “Spiritual Hunger: Exposure > Desire > Appetite > Hunger > Eat”.

This flow is important to understanding how you keep following God with passion over years and decades. When we get saved, we are excited. God supernaturally gives you passion. We pursue God. We want to know the Bible and learn to hear his voice. We want to hang around other people going in the same direction. But eventually we grow tired. This could be because of many reasons, circumstances, people, etc. happen. I want to assure you this is normal. This flow will keep you excited. The key is to understand the process and realize you have to learn to feed the passion yourself. I have been following God for 50+ years as of the time of this article. It is a process I have followed most of my life. It works!

Exposure

When you first get saved, God gave you passion to follow him. Eventually, learn to add to the passion yourself. I call this process ‘Spiritual Hunger’. First, realize you create passion or ‘hunger’ for him by exposing yourself to people, teaching, events that are hungry for God. When you feel lethargic, tell yourself, “I have to change who I hang around and what I am doing.” Seek friends who are following him. Visit places passionate for him. Search the internet if you have to for passionate worship services. Make yourself do it. Why does God not just give me passion all the time? Love is reciprocal. In the beginning, he lets you know how much he loves you. But over time he wants to see if you will pursue him for love. Nobody wants a self-centered lover.

Desire

As you pursue hungry, passionate people and places, ask God to give you spiritual hunger for Him. Song of Solomon 1:4a says, “Draw me after you and let us run together!” Even though we need to move towards him, continually, ask for Holy Spirit’s help. Literally pray daily this verse. You can just repeat these words. When he sees you are doing all you know, Holy Spirit will supernaturally draw you. You will experience the exhilaration of running with Jesus. The ‘deader’ you feel, the more you pray ‘draw me’!

Hunger

When you are physically hungry, and you eat, you get full and quit eating. Spiritual hunger is different. When you ‘eat’ of God’s presence, you get hungrier. You want more and more.

You now have an overview of how to create hunger and ‘eat’ of him your whole life. The key is to understand when you aren’t hungry, you can create that hunger and feed yourself. Holy Spirit will come alongside of you and increase your hunger and draw him to you. You can increase your relationship with God year after year. It will culminate in the cry of Revelation 22:17, “The Spirit and the bride (you) say, “Come.””
