Practicing His Presence

You can walk in His presence 24 hours a day. You are created to be a continual carrier of His presence. I know it seems impossible, but it is. We have to change our thinking.

We were born into this world not knowing his presence, living by our 5 physical senses. But it is possible to live first by our spiritual senses. We have to learn how to tune these spiritual senses to God’s presence. It will take practice, but as we walk through this article, I think you will start sensing his presence more.

Let’s pray a quick prayer before we start: Jesus, help me notice your presence. Help me learn to direct my affection to you. Amen

To increase his presence, put your total trust in God.

There is no place he will take you that is not right for you. There is nothing he will say to you that will not be for your maturity. As we surrender to him, he comes closer. He sees your heart to be his and to follow him. He responds with grace and love. Hold nothing back. Trust in him fully.

Pray: Jesus, I surrender all to you. I will trust you fully. Where my emotions and mind are scared, help me walk forward. I know fully surrendering to you is the only way I should live. Help Holy Spirit!.

Increase His presence by praying or worshipping

When you pray or worship you almost always feel his presence. Remember these times. It is God’s will that you experience these times all day. Use these experiences as a baseline of practicing his presence. When you don’t feel his presence during the day, pause, relax, and say, “where are you Jesus? I want to walk with your presence right now. I don’t want to wait till my next prayer or worship time.” Actively, pray for this. Pause after saying this and remember how it was when you were praying or worshipping. As you do this, you will sense his presence more.

Ask Him How You and Him are Doing

He may answer and he may not. More than likely, you will ‘sense’ his answer. If he is pleased, you will often feel a sense of peace. If you hear or sense nothing, that is ok. But ask him regularly if he is pleased. Tell him you want to do everything with him in mind. This is a simple step, but one that will continually bring your mind back to him.

Involve Him in Your Trials

Tough day? Facing problems? Don’t give up or just ‘grind’ through without involving him. First, give him your feelings of discouragement. Be honest with him. Tell him you need him more than ever. Pause and relax. Take a deep breath. Tell him you do not want to go through this without him. Tell him you need his wisdom, peace, and presence. Pause again and think about him.

Slow down till the problems fade away from consuming your thoughts. Thank him for showing up and that you know you will have his wisdom because you walk with him. God always gives us light in the midst of our doubts when we have no other purpose but to please Him. Then go back to walking through life knowing he is beside you.

Our Purpose is to Love On Him

When we seek to please him, all other things in life get put into right alignment. When our goals, purposes, ministry, children, and family overwhelm us. Stop. Relax. Tell Jesus, “I know I have these things in life I have to do. But really, all I want to do is to love on you and be in your presence.” It will surprise you how much this simple action will change your day. Try it now.

Matthew 22:37 says, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” How do we love him with all of our heart? I believe it starts with the desire to do whatever it takes to live the rest of your life in His presence. Do we know what this will entail? No. But it is the right first step. Is this your desire? If not, ask Holy Spirit to help you make it your desire. When you are ready, tell Jesus, I want to arrange my life so that I can live in your presence and love on you for the rest of my life.

Pray: “Jesus, I want to arrange my life so that I can live in your presence for the rest of my life.”

This is a simple prayer, but a powerful one. When you pray it, it is a big step of submission. I encourage you to pray it regularly. It is saying, I will do whatever it takes to walk in your presence 24/7, even if it means to be deprived of all other comforts. When you pray to this depth, your life will never be the same

When we are willing to go to this depth of desire for Jesus, where we are willing to be deprived of all other comforts, he will increase in our life. Our hearts acquire desires that steal attention from Jesus. Jesus wants to possess our heart alone. That is what Matthew 22:37 means: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart.“ As we empty what is first in our heart, he will fill it with him. This doesn’t mean you can’t love other things, but they can’t be first. This is what Jesus means when he says, “you have left your first love.” (Revelation 2:4). We usually never just walk away from Jesus. He just gradually gets pushed to the side.

Pray: Holy Spirit, show me where I have allowed other desires to be first in my life instead of Jesus and then help me repent.

Speak Plainly Like You Would to a Friend

Following Jesus is easier than you may think. You don’t need to lie down on a bed of nails or walk across hot coals. It is this simple: “Jesus, I love you. I want to always love you. I choose to focus on you today.”

One thing that has helped me in walking with Jesus is to be simple in my speaking towards him. Speak plainly like you would to a friend. You don’t have to think through the right words or get in a certain position or behave in a certain manner. These things will distract you from him. Be yourself. He likes the way you are created. How do you know? Because he created you. Be your serious, sarcastic, funny, or whoever you are self in talking to him. Remove all pretensions. Be you.

Pay Attention to Small NudgesMany times we get so busy we forget about involving God in our daily life. During these times, God will often nudge us with small impressions. To grow in walking in his presence, we need to recognize these small impressions. Ask Holy Spirit to make you more sensitive to his nudges. As you grow in this, you are becoming mature in walking with God.

Allow Him to Empty Your Heart

Do you feel like God often strips you down to nothing? Takes everything away? If he is doing this, it is because he wants to possess your heart alone. He wants to remove everything that competes with him. He is a jealous God! Allow this process to proceed. Allow Him to empty your heart. The reward is he will fill it up with him and you will no longer be empty.

Make the decision to always pursue him. To make it our life goal to always live in His presence. If you will do this now, he will give you all of the insights, tools, and wisdom to make this happen. Remember, he wants it more than you do. He died for it!

Tell Jesus What You Appreciate About Him

Tell Jesus what you appreciate about him like, “You are amazing”, “I love your generosity”, “You are beautiful”, “Thank you for your faithfulness.” Say a simple phrase that you like and then pause. Savoring what you said and think about him. Don’t say a lot. You will find that Jesus’ peace will come around you.

Be Still

One of the best ways to increase your presence of Him is being still. I am mostly talking about ‘stilling’ your soul. This is your mind and emotions. It is hard to sense him when your soul is swirling with thoughts, questions, to dos, emotions. Practice taking a few minutes everyday and just sitting and meditating on him. Think of his goodness. Tell him how much you love him. This will start to still your soul so that you can encounter more of him.

Begin Every Task Recognizing Jesus

Doing the day while you are working, begin every task recognizing that Jesus is there. While you are doing your task, pause internally, and thank him that he is there with you. When you finish the task thank him for being with you. This is difficult I know. But with practice it will increase your sensitivity of Him.

Increasing Hope

One of the benefits of learning to walk in His presence is your faith grows more alive and active in all circumstances of life. Our hope in life also grows. We realize he is close to us and it gives us anticipation of the future. Do you feel hopeless? Let this be a trigger for you to slow down, sit down, be still and meditate on Jesus telling him how amazing he is.

Closing

The greatest encounter is to encounter the depths of Jesus. Ask Holy Spirit to show you the depths of who Jesus is, his characteristics, his personality, his attributes. He is much more than our savior. You will never fathom all there is about him. He goes on forever.
