“Mommy, measure me again!” How many times have we heard a young child say these words?
It’s fun to watch a young child who wants to get taller. They will day after day measure themselves to see if they are taller. After several days they will stop because they don’t see any improvement.
How does a child measure their growth? They can only do it over a period of time. It’s the same way in our Christian life. You can only measure if you are growing in the Lord when you compare yourself to a period longer than a day, a week, or a month!
Have you ever had a bad week where you were impatient, lost your temper, were irritable most of the time? Of course you have. Are you becoming less mature? Probably not, you just had a week where your soul won out over your spirit most of the time. But if you sit down, relax, and think about it you are probably more mature overall this week than last year.
The second plant stimulant to growth is this: you grow inch by inch, act upon act, layer upon layer, truth upon truth. Only over time can you really see that you are growing. Many people get discouraged and quit following God because they are not instantly tall!
Yes, God does bless us with special gifts and blessings but growth or maturity requires time and patience. But as we stay close to Him it does always come. There will be a time as you faithfully walk with Him that you will look back at your life and say, “Wow, I am growing!”
Let me give you a simple example of how growth comes. Approximately 2 years ago Relationship Church started a weekly email to its members listing the events and announcements for that week. I decided at that time to start writing a blog or an article once a month in it. I thought this would be a good way to share some thoughts that would never make it into a Sunday message. I had never really done anything like this and the thought of having to write something once a month seemed a little scary.
Quickly I found myself writing a blog once a week. The amazing thing is that two weeks ago I wrote the 100th blog. 2 years ago I’m not sure I would have believed you if you had told me that I would write 100 blogs. I was just hoping to be able to write 12 over the next year!
This perfectly illustrates growth. Some of the blogs were not that good. Some of the blogs were good. Overall there has been growth in me though. Writing blog after blog brought 100 blogs. When I was writing blog 27 or 48 or 73 was I thinking about getting to 100 blogs? Honestly, no. I was just thinking about having to fill some white space on a weekly email.
So this week walk with God knowing that what you are doing is making a difference. Even if it is a week where you do a lot of ‘fighting’, know that you are still growing!
Never stop walking!
